Simple Steps To Manage Disposable Masks Waste Properly
In
the previous article it was discussed that mask waste threatens nature. Therefore,
we must raise awareness to protect the environment during the current pandemic.
We can start with simple steps that we can do. One of them is by managing the waste
of masks that we have used everyday. We need to know how to dispose of mask
waste so that it is safe for the environment and other living things.
Now, I will share to you how to safely dispose masks waste. Based on the Community Mask Waste Management Guidelines released by the Ministry of Health of Indonesia in March 2020, you can apply the following methods:
1. Collect used masks.
When you leave the house, you need to change the disposable mask several times, for example if it is wet, too damp, torn, or has been used for 6 hours. If you don't have time to properly dispose of the used masks, you can collect them first.
2. Disinfect used masks.
You can disinfect using chlorine, bleach, or disinfectant.
3. Change the shape of the mask so that it is no longer intact.
This is one way to prevent the reuse of masks. The way to change the shape of the mask can be by tearing or cutting the mask into two parts, and breaking the mask strap by cutting them off so that they are not reused or caught in other objects or living things.
4. Wrap tightly with plastic and throw the mask waste into the domestic trash.
Masks should not be thrown into the same trash bin with other household waste. You can provide a special bag for used masks and throw the masks into the trash for infectious waste (yellow) in public spaces.
5. Don't forget to wash your hands with soap and running water.
You can also use a hand sanitizer with a minimum alcohol content of 60%.
That’s all ! It is so easy to do. I hope that in the future we will continue to manage mask waste properly and protect our environment.
